@cartertemm @TheQuinbox Thank you so much for the kind words and the follow! I know the Apex is an older, discontinued device, but for now I'm using it as a simple Braille terminal to read and write text through my computer. It's helping me experiment and develop the Braille subsystem for FreeBSD. Hopefully, in the future, I'll be able to reach out to some organizations and borrow more recent devices to test and expand support. There's still a lot to explore, and I'm excited to see how far this can go!

When working from my home office, I regularly switch between my corporate Mac and my personal Mac. Since I share the same Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse between both machines, switching devices used to be a bit annoying. Most of the time, I ended up plugging in a cable just to move them to the other Mac (and of course first wasting time to find a lightning to USB-C cable).So I crafted "a Keyboard Switcher" which is an open-source macOS menu bar application that makes it easier to switch paired Bluetooth input devices between Macs. Instead of manually reconnecting everything, you can simply release devices on one Mac and connect them on the other with just a few clicks.Some of the features include:Connect or release individual Bluetooth devicesGroup multiple devices, such as a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, and switch them togetherUse global hotkeys to switch device groups without opening the menuGet an overview of paired and connected devices directly from the macOS menu barThe goal was simple: Solve a small but annoying problem in my daily workflow without adding unnecessary complexity. The project is open source, and the source code is available on my git server and GitHub. If you use multiple Macs and share your Apple input devices between them, feel free to give it a try. @patricus Thanks for your feedback! I’m definitely looking into building something new, like single-dimensional text interfaces designed specifically for screen reader users. I believe there’s still plenty of room for innovation in open-source accessibility, and I’d love to explore new approaches that make these tools more efficient, lightweight, and accessible.

@wearetheprojekt Yeah, I was actually thinking about this hybrid approach today. FreeBSD already uses something quite similar for graphics drivers.If BRLTTY had a BSD-like license, I would have imported it into the FreeBSD base system. The problem is that its license doesn't allow that. So anything we use from BRLTTY would have to be installed manually by the user, `pkg install brltty`.For speech synthesis, there shouldn't be any licensing issues. We already have some proof-of-concept work showing that the virtual console can communicate with a speech synthesizer, and there are several synthesizers with BSD-like licenses that we could use.So they could potentially be available starting from the OS installer.
