The FreeBSD User Groups page has got quite outdated so crowdsourcing some replies has helped update a few things. Mostly group closures unfortunately but also some changes of contact details. For people who don't have a Reddit user account, I also started a FreeBSD Forums thread that found a few more updates, including a change to a long-standing venue. So feel free to reply there too: forums.freebsd.org/threads/102512/ I don't check for replies quite so regularly here - but if you don't have a FreeBSD Forums or Reddit account then leave a reply here and I'll get back to you at some point. -

A few months ago I threw this question out into the void - "what if you could access the fediverse through your Usenet reader??" and got almost no response. Still, the idea had lodged in my brain and wouldn't go away so this weekend I caved in and built the thing. Hat tip to the author of the excellent nntpserver package that did all the hard stuff.
I look forward to seeing someone's screenshots of fediverse posts on a Commodore 64, some day.

A friend of mine was installing OpenBSD for the first time, and came
upon a minor roadblock. Em didn't realize that you should really
install all system software sets unless you're looking for a whole
world of issues any sane person may not want to deal with. Part of me
wanted to say to my friend: "Read the FaQ and get stuffed!", I didn't
cos that wasn't the best idea to say to a new user.
I understand if devs and any contributor feel(s) like my initial
reaction, but would it hurt to add a 1/2-line warning?:...

OpenBSD.Thoughts? I'm considering writing a diff if more end users than myself are interested.

Congrats NetBSD! The first BSD I ever installed successfully... then quickly dropped it because I was lost and confused. But that's a reflection of where my skills were at many years ago... Since then NetBSD now has things like pkgsrc and bozohttpd. My time is fairly limited nowadays but it's still on my TODO to give NetBSD another serious go. It probably won't replace OpenBSD for me, but I love hacking on systems and NetBSD is the ultimate hacking OS. Looking forward to another year of NetBSD updates. Well done and thanks to all contributors! 🥳 -

I am returning to BSD. It has been a wee while since I set up and administered BSD systems, but I did put in quite a few years before I gave up. I am definitely looking forward to getting off Linux. My first use case is to replace our server, a 15 year old Mac Mini that once ran OSX Server and then Debian.
Rather than make an ill-informed choice and then pester everyone with frustrating questions, I am hoping to solicit a bit of advice. I am hoping to get a used server and use jails to run various services.
Would a used Dell R640 with the H730p hardware raid card and a 2xSFP+ 10G card be an easy FreeBSD install? My sense from looking at posts elsewhere is that many people run FreeBSD on these, but I might be about to make a Well Known Mistake. It will be inside our router and firewall, so I'm not so worried about a hardened install.
Anything from raucous laughter followed by informative snorts through to gentle hints gratefully appreciated...
